Why do I have ingrown toenails and what can I do about it?
Ingrown toenails result when the nail grows into the flesh of your toes. (Often the big toe).
Common causes include:
- Wearing shoes that crowd your toenails
- Cutting your toenails too short or cutting toenails too far up on the sides.
- Unusually curved toenails and thickening of your toenails, both these conditions worsen with age.
- Injury to your toenails.
To help prevent ingrown toenails:
- Trim your toenails straight across but smooth the corners slightly so there are no sharp edges.
- Keep toenails at a moderate length, not too short and not too long.
- Wear shoes that fit properly as tight shoes can put pressure on the nails and push them to grow into the soft tissue. (You should always be able to wriggle your toes inside your shoes).
- Wear protective shoes at work to prevent injury to your toes.
Having a regular pedicure by a qualified pedicurist can reduce the chance of getting ingrown toenails and relieve the pain and pressure of toenails that are already ingrown.
